Definition
A letter of application, also known as a cover letter, is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience. A letter of application typically provides detailed information on why are you are qualified for the job you are applying for.
Purpose
Letter should let the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, and how you will follow-up.
Generic structure
- Title, the name of company or type of job vacancy
- Purpose, the purpose of announcing a job vacancy
- Qualification, the qualifications or requirements the company wants towards the job seeker
- Address or contacts, address or contact number to find out more information or to send the job applicants
What to include in your letter
- Heading, includes your name and contact information
- Greeting, addressed a spesific person, if possible
- Introduction, which should include why the applicant is writing
- Body, which discusses your relevant qualifications
- Close, which thanks the reader and provides contact information and follow-up details
- Your signature to end the letter
Your letter must contain
- Your personal contact information : name, address, email address, phone number, etc.
- The address of the company you are writing to
- The date
Opening salutation
- If you know the name of the referent person : Dear Mr. Smith
- If you don’t know the name of the person : Dear Sirs, Dear Sir or Madam
Closing the letter
- Looking forward to your reply
- I look forward to your reply
- I look forward to hearing from you soon
- I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience
Signing the letter
- Sincerely
- Yours sincerely
